Beit Nassif Museum .. Documenting the development of Arabic calligraphy in the historic Jeddah
Stones embrace inscriptions that include the names of personalities from men and women, along with Quranic verses and supplications, were written in advanced written methods that reflect a prominent civilized level, while the date of their writing dates back to the period from the second century to the tenth century of migration, which makes it a rich archaeological reference that contributes to understanding the development of the art of Arabic calligraphy and the diversity of its artistic methods over centuries.
Arabic calligraphy
The stones dated in the second century AH are among the oldest exhibits in the museum, as their exact details and distinct decorations reflect the mastery of the art of Arabic calligraphy in that era, and the rich diversity of the written patterns used.
These inscriptions reveal a noticeable development in the art of early Kufic calligraphy, in addition to other forms that were used to write down names, supplications and correspondence, which reflects the high level of artistic creativity and Arabic calligraphy during that period.
Cultural heritage
This presentation comes within the efforts of the historic Jeddah program to introduce new visitors and generations to the cultural heritage that the region abounds in, by highlighting important archaeological exhibits in a scientific and educational manner that attracts different age groups, and provides an integrated knowledge experience that enhances awareness of the history of the region and its role as a major cultural and commercial center throughout history.
The display of archaeological discoveries, including the witnesses in the Museum of Antiquities, contributes to “Beit Nassif” throughout the year in consolidating the historical status of Jeddah as a distinct tourist and cultural destination, as it is presented in an educational manner that combines pleasure and knowledge, to reflect the Kingdom’s interest in preserving and promoting cultural heritage at a local and global level.
