A 6.2 -magnitude earthquake hit Istanbul

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Administration said that a 6.2 -magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul today, Wednesday, which is one of the most powerful earthquakes in the city in the past few years.

Istanbul lives about 16 million people.

There were no reports yet, but residents evacuated buildings that were shaken at the time of the earthquake.

The earthquake took place at 12:49 local time (0949 GMT) and its center in the Silveri area, 80 km west of Istanbul.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Administration stated that the earthquake center was 6.92 km deep.

The TRT station said that a person was injured after jumping from a balcony during the earthquake that occurred during a public holiday in Türkiye.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Department warned people in the area against entering damaged buildings.

The German Geological Sciences Research Center (GFSD) said the earthquake was 6.02 and that its center is at a depth of ten kilometers.
