المملكة: Through 270 stations .. Artificial intelligence enhances earthquake monitoring in the Kingdom

The Saudi Geological Survey revealed the expansion of the use of artificial intelligence technologies within its national seismic monitoring system, which includes 270 highly sensitive digital stations distributed in various regions of the Kingdom, in a move that reflects the size of the scientific and technical progress achieved by the authority in the field of monitoring seismic activity and promoting national geological security.
This network is one of the largest regional networks in terms of geographical spread and technical integration, as stations operate around the clock using advanced technologies to monitor the most accurate earthquakes, including small earthquakes that the majority of the population may not feel, but it carries important scientific indicators that help in understanding the tectonic activity and follow -up of the ground plates in the region.
The authority explained that these stations are directly linked to satellites and safe internet networks, which ensures the speed of data transfer immediately to advanced analysis centers, which in turn use the latest scientific software to determine the location of the earthquake, its depth and strength with high accuracy, within the borders of the Kingdom, and in some cases outside it also, especially in the border areas.

Seismic monitoring system

In a related context, the commission indicated that it has developed special algorithms that depend on artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, as it was successfully applied in a number of areas with frequent seismic activity, and achieved accurate and reliable results that contributed to improving the quality of data extracted from the stations, and accelerating the process of evaluation and early interaction with any seismic activity.
This development is part of the authority’s efforts to update its infrastructure and enhance its technical capabilities, as it continuously invests in training and rehabilitation, and modernizing the devices and software used, in addition to continuous cooperation with research centers and national and international universities in order to exchange experiences and enhance the efficiency of the seismic monitoring system.
The authority emphasized that these efforts come within its strategic vision aimed at providing an integrated scientific system that contributes to supporting decision -makers and enhancing geological security in the Kingdom, in line with the targets of the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, which puts public safety and proper urban planning within the priorities of sustainable development.
