Save the life of a child who swallowed a circular battery at the Maternity and Children Hospital in Al -Ahsa

The emergency department of the Mon delivery and children in Al -Ahsa, one of the components of Al -Ahsa’s healthy gathering, received a 4 -year -old child, who has difficulty swallowing and continuous nausea for more than four hours. By conducting the necessary clinical checks and radiation, it was found that the presence of a foreign body in the esophagus is suspected of a circular battery.

The child was transferred directly to the operating room, where a flexible endoscope was made for children, through which this body (battery) was extracted, and the results of the endoscope showed the presence of second degree burns and partially violating the esophageal wall, which required an accurate medical follow -up for 5 days, after which the child left the hospital with good health, praise be to God.

The digestive system department for children is one of the important specialized departments in the hospital, as it includes a modern endoscopic unit that is managed with qualified medical cadres, which enables to deal with emergency and accurate cases with high efficiency; Where the department recently obtained an adoption as a training center specialized in this field, which enhances the quality of services provided to children in the region.

In this context, the medical team stressed the importance of societal awareness of the danger of small circular batteries on children, which are usually used in many devices and games, stressing that swallowing them may lead to serious complications that threaten children’s lives, such as internal burns, bleeding or tissue damage.

It is noteworthy that the maternity and children hospital recorded during the last period 22 cases of swallowing circular batteries among children, including 17 cases during the past year, and 5 cases since the beginning of this year, all of which required an urgent intervention using the endoscope to extract them, highlighting the urgent need to take safety precautions inside the homes.
