المملكة: The railway sector transports 35 million passengers and 3.8 million tons of goods within 3 months
The General Transport Authority revealed in its quarterly statistical publication for the performance of the railway sector in the Kingdom during the first quarter of 2025 AD, strong growth indicators that reflect the development of the rail transport system and the high operational efficiency.
The trains recorded the transportation of more than 35 million passengers, and more than 3.8 million tons of minerals and goods, in addition to transporting more than 239 thousand record containers, in a performance that embodies the vital role of this sector in supporting the national economy and achieving the targets of the national strategy for transport and logistical services.
Transport within Saudi cities
The authority indicated that the transportation inside the cities accounted for the largest share of the total passengers, as they numbered more than 32.3 million passengers, distributed over several networks, most notably the Riyadh train, which transported more than 25 million passengers.
It was followed by automatic transport at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah with more than 6 million passengers, while automatic transport was transported within Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman University more than 900 thousand passengers.
This reflects the increasing dependence on modern means of transport within the major urban domains.
Al -Haramain High Train
As for the level of transportation between cities, the number of passengers transferred across trains reached more than 3.4 million passengers, recording a 25 % increase compared to the same period last year.
The Al -Haramain Express Train exported this category by transporting more than 2.8 million passengers, while the North Train Network of the company “Saar” transported more than 200,000 passengers.
The East Train Network recorded more than 350,000 passengers, reflecting the growing confidence in network efficiency and its ability to provide a safe and fast transportation between the cities of the Kingdom.
Logistical transportation
On the side of logistical transport, statistics showed a growing performance in the quantities of goods and minerals transferred across the trains, as the North Train Company succeeded in transporting more than 3.4 million tons of minerals, with a growth rate of 9 %.
While the East Train Network recorded the transfer of 239 thousand record containers, in addition to 377 thousand tons of goods, an increase of 27 % over the first quarter of last year.
This enhances the status of railways as a strategic option in supporting logistical processes at the Kingdom level.

Development of transport infrastructure in Saudi Arabia
The General Transport Authority confirms that this escalating performance of the railway sector represents a direct reflection of the ongoing government efforts to develop the transport infrastructure and implement projects that support the expansion and integration of networks.
This is in addition to adopting the best operational and technical practices, which contributes to enhancing the sector’s sustainability and raising the quality of services provided to citizens and residents.
This accelerated growth is an affirmation of the progress made towards achieving the target of Saudi Vision 2030 in making the Kingdom a global center in the field of transportation and logistical services.
And that is by enhancing the interdependence between cities, facilitating safe and effective movement, reducing carbon emissions, and providing multiple transportation options that support the quality of life and contribute to sustainable economic development.
