Dubai Airports and “Union for Energy Services” expect an agreement to complete the project to update the lighting systems in Dubai airports and Al Maktoum

In a move that contributes to enhancing energy efficiency and consolidating operational sustainability practices, Dubai airports signed an agreement with the Etihad Energy Services Company “Etihad Esco”, which is fully owned by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, to launch the final stage of the project to update the lighting systems in Dubai International airports and Al Maktoum International.
This new stage includes replacing more than 180,000 traditional lighting units with energy -saving units in airport facilities. The “Concurs A” building at Dubai International Airport is the largest area covered by the project within this stage, which comes as a complement to the first stage, which included replacing 150,000 lighting units at Dubai International Airport, bringing the total number of units replaced to more than 330 thousand units, which makes it one of the largest initiatives to update lighting systems at the region’s airports.
It is expected that the project will contribute to reducing energy consumption by about 47 million kilowatt hours annually, equivalent to the average consumption of more than 4,300 homes during a whole year, which reflects the concrete impact of sustainable practices in operational operations. The project will also include annual savings exceeding 20 million dirhams, which supports the efforts of Dubai airports in promoting operational efficiency and achieving the environmental goals of the Emirate of Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al -Tayer, Managing Director, CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said:
Cooperation between Dubai Airports and Etihad Energy Services is a leading model in consolidating energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and achieving the goals of the Dubai Energy Clean Strategy. Through leading initiatives such as the Dubai Airports Rehabilitation Project, we contribute to building a green and more flexible future to support our national aspirations.
For his part, Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “This project plays in partnership with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and the Etihad Energy Services Company, highlighting the importance of constructive cooperation to achieve concrete results in the field of sustainability. Airports are among the largest energy consumption, and this puts on our responsibility for the leadership of actual change towards a sustainable future. In addition to updating the lighting systems, this project reflects this project. Our commitment to integrating sustainability at the core of our daily operations is that every kilowatts is provided represents a step towards reducing the environmental impact, and embodies what sustainable airports can achieve. “
In turn, Dr. Walid Al -Nuaimi, CEO of Etihad Energy Services Company, said: “We are working in the Union ESCO to transform the Dubai Infrastructure into a role model in energy efficiency and sustainability. The final stage of the project to update the Dubai airports is a sign of effective cooperation in terms of great energy savings and reducing the carbon footprint, which reflects our common vision towards making Dubai a world leader in sustainable development.”
The installation work is scheduled to start later this year, and will continue until the second half of 2027. This project confirms the commitment of Dubai airports to reduce carbon emissions through the implementation of practical and effective projects that enhance Dubai’s position as a global center for sustainable infrastructure in the aviation sector.
