Sheikha Al Dhaheri: Abu Dhabi is at the forefront of global efforts to reduce climate change

Abu Dhabi, June 5 / WAM / The Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi renewed its commitment to leading environmental and climatic efforts locally and globally by launching and implementing qualitative policies and initiatives that contribute to achieving sustainable development, coinciding with the International Environment Day, which highlights this year on the challenges related to plastic pollution.

On this occasion, His Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary -General of the Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi, affirmed that the authority continues its pivotal role in protecting the environment, preserving natural resources, biological diversity, and adapting to the effects of climate change in line with the UAE Vision 2071 and enhances Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading capital of environmental and climate work.

She pointed to the authority’s continued implementation of effective strategies to reduce climate change and reduce dependence on plastic products, especially mono -use, in line with the World Environment Day logo for this year: “ending plastic pollution”.

She explained that the Abu Dhabi Plastic Materials policy used for one time launched by the authority succeeded in avoiding the consumption of more than 360 million plastic bags, while the initiative of “incentive bottles restored” contributed to collecting more than 230 million plastic bottles to this day, equivalent to 2000 tons of recyclable plastic.

She emphasized that these initiatives support the emirate’s direction towards the circular economy by enabling society to save the safe from waste and enhance environmental awareness, which reflects positively on the quality and sustainability of life.

Al -Dhaheri pointed out that the Environment Authority – Abu Dhabi established a pioneering model by building effective local and international partnerships and setting ambitious goals to reduce the effects of climate change, stressing that Abu Dhabi is moving with confidence towards a more sustainable future.

She said: “On the World Environment Day, we renew our commitment to continuing hard work to achieve a future free of plastic pollution and a healthy and prosperous environment for future generations through initiatives that put man and the environment at the heart of attention.”
