This came during a press conference held in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al -Dahhak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Engineer Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of a recycling group, and a number of leaders from both sides.
This initiative, which falls within the national agenda of integrated waste management 2023-2026, is a pivotal step in the UAE’s efforts to enhance sustainability and address environmental issues, as it aims to compel producers to bear the responsibility of managing the waste of their products throughout its life cycle, which contributes to advancing the circular economy and achieving sustainable development.
Cooperation aims to define mutual roles and obligations in implementing a 9 -month -old pilot project, targeting three main types of waste: electronic, batteries, and packaging products.
The project will be implemented primarily in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where the “rotation” group will take over the role of the responsibility of the producers (Pro) “temporarily, and the responsibility of managing the experimental project in coordination with the producers, establishing a central mechanism for data collection, and evaluating the project progress, while the ministry will participate in the administration through a team of consultants, and will lead awareness and community education efforts to ensure the success of the initiative.
His Excellency Dr. Amna Al -Dahhak emphasized the approach of the partnership adopted by the UAE, and she said: We are happy in continuous cooperation with a recycling group in achieving our goals aimed at the integrated waste management, noting that the extended responsibility initiative of the product represents one of the most important pillars of this trend through the involvement of everyone, from manufacturers, suppliers and consumers, in the waste management process according to the best international standards.
Engineer Ali Al Dhaheri said that the project will contribute fundamentally to the development of the waste management system by obliging the factories to take responsibility for the waste resulting from its activities, stressing that the implementation of this experimental model establishes strong foundations for building a more responsibility and transparent system, and will lead its results to valuable conclusions on which future strategies are built beneficial to the environment, the business sector and the entire society.
The event witnessed a remarkable step that reflected the commitment of the private sector, as 26 leading companies signed (Sharjah Environment Group, Excels, Emaar, supply, and recycling materials, Samsung, Kanbak, Tetra Pak, Hutamaki, Lulu Group, Dilsco, Sparklo, Dubai Holding, Dagban, Wat to recycle electronic waste, and Nadra, Tomra, Rissiklem, Jerman Distribation, CPA, Iros, Sig, Encosirf, ECC, Carrefur and Violet) to “pledge the extended responsibility of the product”, according to which companies are committed to enhancing awareness of the project, providing incentives to consumers to separate their waste, and providing the data needed to evaluate performance, and allocate resources To ensure the treatment of collecting waste in an environmentally sound manner, establishing the UAE’s position as a global center for innovative environmental solutions.
In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Eng. Alia Al Harmoudi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector in the Ministry, explained that the project aims to transform waste from a challenge to an economic opportunity, stressing that the UAE is the first country in the region to initiate this model.
In turn, Ahmed Al -Kiumi, Executive Director of the Strategy in “Tawarour”, indicated that the project will obligate manufacturers to contribute to the material recycling costs, a value that will be determined by the results of the experimental study, stressing the importance of the consumer’s role in making the initiative successful by choosing products committed to the system.
It is noteworthy that the responsibilities of the product and supplier were determined in Cabinet Resolution No. 39 of 2021 regarding the executive regulations of Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 regarding the integrated waste management, and the framework of the “extended responsibility of the product” aims to three types of products, including packaging products, electrical and electronic appliances, and batteries.
