4.48 billion euros, the value of the European Union’s imports of liquefied Russian gas in the first half

Brussels on August 18/ WAM/ The value of the European Union imports of LNG (LNG) from Russia reached 4.48 billion euros (5.2 billion dollars) during the first half of this year, compared to 3.47 billion euros in the same period last year, which reflects a remarkable increase in the volume of imports despite the Ukrainian crisis and the penalties imposed on Moscow.
A report issued today by the European Statistics Office “Eurostat”, that the total imports of the European Union of LNG during the first six months of this year amounted to about 26.9 billion euros, and the United States topped the list of exporters to the bloc, with a stake of about 13.7 billion euros, to remain the largest liquefied gas supplier to Europe.
The European Commission had indicated in previous data that the United States acquired about 45% of the total European LNG imports in 2024, which established its location as a main source of energy for the continent.
Despite the strict embargo imposed by the European Union on Russian oil and coal after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the bloc has not yet imposed sanctions on Russian gas, whether through tubes or liquefied gas, as a result of the continued dependence of some member states on Russian supplies. Russian gas flows still arrive in Europe via lines such as “Turk Stream”, along with marine shipments of liquefied gas.
