The UAE participates in the forty -seventh consultative meeting of the Antarctic Treaty in Milan after joining the treaty in December 2024

Milan, July 18/ WAM/ The UAE participated for the first time in the forty -seventh consultative meeting of the ATCM Treaty, which was held in the Italian city of Milan, after joining the Antarctic Treaty in December 2024.

The UAE delegation was chaired by His Excellency Abdullah Balala, Vice President of the Emirates Al -Qutbi Program and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, with the participation of representatives of the Emirates Al -Qatibi program.
The ATCM meeting is the main forum for international cooperation on issues related to Antarctica.

This meeting is held annually, as it brings advisory parties to the exchange of information, discussing issues of common concern, and proposing measures that enhance the goals of the treaty.

This year’s session witnessed the participation of more than 400 delegations representing 29 consulting parties and 28 non -consulting parties, in addition to the invited observers and experts.
In the first participation of the UAE, His Excellency Abdullah Balala stressed the importance of this achievement, saying: “We are happy to join for the first time to the forty -seventh consultative meeting as a new, non -consultant party. This achievement reflects the UAE’s firm commitment to international cooperation and environmental supervision.
The UAE continues to support scientific progress and enhance multilateral cooperation, through national initiatives such as the UAE polar program, which enhances its role as a constructive and responsible party in facing global environmental challenges.
During the meeting, the UAE participated in bilateral meetings with other countries and parties, as it discussed the opportunities for cooperation in the field of polar research, and unofficial dialogues took place on ways to enhance scientific knowledge and protect the environment in the region.
As the main forum for the Antarctic Governance, the Atcm meeting enables the parties to coordinate efforts, enhance environmental protection, and support peaceful scientific cooperation. Where discussions this year dealt with major topics that included preserving the environment, scientific cooperation, operational safety, and responsible tourism in the region.
The participation of the UAE reflects its growing role in global environmental diplomacy and its commitment to multilateral operations that protect weak environmental systems.

The UAE will continue its participation in the system of the Antarctic Treaty, where the signing of the environmental protocol – a major tool for protecting the ecosystems systems and enhancing responsible use – represents the next step in its contribution to preserving the continent for future generations
