"Cancer friends" International experiences are inspired to support and empower patients

Sharjah, August 8 / WAM / The Society of Cancer Friends Association said it applies a number of initiatives inspired by successful international experiences, including social support, art, music, and technology programs.

The association pointed out that among these initiatives is the “Fishing Hope” initiative in Rwanda, which was launched by a group of widows survivors of cancer, and the Japanese media initiative Massako and Ecamia, which established an awareness platform for the elderly in Japan, in addition to the “Angham Lavance” festival in Trinidad and Tobago, which celebrates the stories of survivors of cancer through music and hair.

The association drew attention to its endeavor to integrate these inspiring experiences in its local programs, through awareness sessions and training courses targeting medical and community cadres, as well as developing indicative content in multiple languages, to meet the needs of different segments of society.

Rashid Al -Amiri, head of the institutional communication department at the association, stressed that the association adopts a comprehensive vision aimed at enabling patients at the cultural and psychological levels, as well as providing the necessary health care.

He said: “The battle against cancer starts from the language we use to talk about the disease, and from our view of patients and their experiences with treatment.”

Al -Amiri added that the association starts in its work a deep understanding of cultural diversity in the UAE, which embraces more than 200 nationalities, which requires the development of communication tools that take into account this diversity, and enhance societal efforts aimed at supporting patients and their families.
