Nations confirm their solidarity with Pakistan, after violent floods that killed hundreds

A statement attributed to the United Nations spokesman stated that the disaster – caused by heavy seasonal rains and aggravated climate change – affected about 1.5 million people and left hundreds of thousands in need of humanitarian aid.

He pointed to damage to more than 3000 homes, 400 schools and about 40 health facilities. The statement conveyed the praise of the Secretary -General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to the Pakistani authorities to transfer more than a million people in Punjab.

Guterres expressed his solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan, and offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.

The spokesman said in his statement that the United Nations and its partners are working closely with the Pakistani authorities for the urgent assessment of the humanitarian effects of the floods, identifying needs and addressing the gaps of response to the catastrophe.

The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, allocated $ 600,000 from the joint regional human finance fund to support relief and recovery efforts. Discussions are currently taking place with the government on the response plan.
