Qatar requests an apology from Israel to resume mediation efforts in Gaza

Qatar asked for an apology from Israel for its raid on Doha before it resumed its mediation in the Gaza peace agreement, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The “Axios” website, which published the news, said that the apology will now constitute a dangerous political coup for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his strict right -wing coalition, but a source familiar with the matter said that the Qataris understand the political complications in Israel and are ready to be flexible in formulating the apology.

This was the first time that Israel has launched an air strike on a Gulf country, which greatly exacerbated its regional isolation.

According to the website, a high -ranking Israeli official said that Israel had underestimated the size of the crisis that will be attacked by Qatar, and that Netanyahu realizes that he had sinned in his appreciation.

The administration of President Donald Trump wants to reduce tensions between Israel and Qatar to resume the Gaza negotiations.

The two sources said that the request for an apology came from the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and that he raised the issue with Foreign Minister Marco Rubio when they met on Tuesday in Doha.

The Qatari request was also presented in meetings between Rubio and Netanyahu, American envoy Steve Witkeov and Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, an informed source said.

It is scheduled to meet Wittouf in New York with Qatari Prime Minister Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani to discuss efforts to end the crisis between Israel and Qatar and allow the resumption of negotiations.

A source familiar with the matter said that the Qataris may agree to an Israeli apology focusing on the killing of the Qatari security officer and includes promises to compensate his family and not violate Qatar again.

Israel has made similar apologies in the past. In 2013, Netanyahu apologized to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the killing of Turkish activists in the 2010 Gaza fleet attack.
