Citizens in Dubai complain about the emission of “annoying scents” in residential areas .. and “municipality”: an action plan to solve the problem

Citizens living in Nad Al -Sheba and Al -Kharaba regions in Dubai confirmed the constant emission of irritating scents, pointing out that they caused them severe embarrassment while receiving their guests, and also pushes them to close the windows of the house permanently, even in the periods in which the weather tends to moderate.

They added that the problem dates back to many years, calling on the concerned authorities to take actual measures that end the problem.

They attributed the reasons for the smells to nearby wastewater treatment plants, and the delay in the periodic maintenance of them, with wind activity at night.

On the other hand, the Dubai Municipality confirmed that it had developed an action plan to develop a Warsan station, aimed at dealing with “wastewater” to keep pace with the accelerated urban renaissance in the emirate.

She also confirmed her intention to introduce advanced sustainable techniques to treat wastewater.

In detail, the citizen Mohammed Abdullah said: “Since I moved to live in my home in Nad Al -Sheba area, in 2021, I suffer from a disturbing smell that spreads from time to time, and extends to the house, which constitutes a source of inconvenience to me and my family, as well as the great embarrassment that we are exposed to while we received the guests. Temporary ends with the end of its effect. ”

He said: “This problem was summarized by me and my small family the joy of moving to the house I built, and I moved to it with my three children.” He called on the competent authorities to consider the issue, and try to find solutions to solve this problem, and (Umm Abdullah), who has lived in the same area 13 years ago, stated that the problem extends for many years.

She said: “We do not know the source of the smells, so we are not a specialist, just as the region is far from the areas exposed to such a problem.” She added: “There are periods in which the smells intensify, and hours continue, especially in the evening period, and spread strongly inside the house, which prevents us from feeling comfortable and our ability to go to sleep.”

She pointed out that “this problem affects the reputation of the region known for its calmness, and its beauty, which reflects the efforts of Dubai Municipality in afforestation and attention to hygiene.”

(Umm Shamsa), who goes to visit her mother in the same area, stated that she was surprised by the annoying smell “as it appears in the region in certain periods, which we do not encounter during the visit of other areas in the emirate.”

She said: “I do not know the reasons, especially since the area is very clean, and even waste containers are clean, and you rarely find waste outside it.”

For his part, Ahmed Ibrahim, one of the workers in the Al -Warqa area, said that the pioneers of restaurants and cafes on Algeria Street face the problem at night because of the strength of the smells, pointing out that they cannot eat food in light of their spread.

He added that the smells are strong, and restaurant workers cannot open windows or terrace in the winter months.

He noticed that the pioneers pioneers are not able to exercise at times due to the smells, and the fear that they will cause them to cause them to cause respiratory diseases and suffocation.

A number of residents of Al -Warqa (3) and (4) expressed their dissatisfaction with the spread of annoying smells, and they told «Emirates Today» that it affects their daily lives for many years, without taking a radical solution that ends suffering. They emphasized that the smells, which they described as a sewage or waste smell, are repeated annoying in different periods of the day, and are more severe in the winter.

Wasting beautiful times

Hamda Ahmed, a resident of “Al -Warqa 3”, said that the annoying smells usually begin at night and last for long hours inside the homes.

She added: “We have to close the doors tightly as soon as the smell infiltrated the house, especially in the night periods, and we did not think about submitting a complaint, because many talked about the problem through radio programs, but without result.”

Asma Lenjawi, a resident of the same region, confirmed that “the smells were spread after ten at night, but they are spread today at multiple times, at dawn and evening, and even in the afternoon.”

She added, “Our suffering increases in the winter. After the rains and the atmosphere improves, the scents suddenly leak, and the beautiful times that we were waiting for to enjoy the external sessions are wasted.”

She pointed out that “some residents receive their day with annoying scents in the morning hours, which disturbs the entire day.”

(Umm Muhammad), a resident of the region, said that “residents filed a complaint to the municipality years ago, and the response came at the time that there is a plan to address the smells, but no actual action was taken, and to still live the problem.”

It was suggested that the waste transfer station in Warns, near the fourth pink, is the potential source of the emission of these scents that are transferred to the areas near it.

As for Makiya Al -Rayes, which moved to “Al -Warqa 4” in 2011, it confirmed that the severe smells are increasing with the high humidity.

She suggested that waste treatment stations be transferred to locations beyond residential areas, noting that the urban expansion in Dubai imposes a review of the distribution of some service facilities.

She stressed that the gas emissions issued by these stations may not show their effects on health immediately, but they may cause long -term damage, especially with the constant inhalation over them over the years.

6 reasons

For his part, a professor of environmental science at Zayed University, Dr. Suhail Al -Ghafli, stated that there are six reasons for the spread of annoying smells in some areas in Dubai, the first of which is nearby sewage stations, especially with the high temperature and humidity that causes them to increase, especially because of the Warns station near the Al -Warqa area, the treatment stations represent one of the main reasons.

He added that «the operational capacity and insufficient expansion represents the second reason, as some stations operate according to an insufficient capacity, which causes increased emissions of inappropriate materials, which in turn need maintenance in those stations», and on the third reason, he said that “it is represented in air fermentation and biological treatment, with the treatment of sanitation inside the stations, some organic materials turn, which causes methane gas, and other sulfur gases And hydrogen with annoying smell. ”

Al -Ghafli stated that the fourth reason is the direction of the wind.

He pointed out that «the weak maintenance comes in the fifth rank in terms of the causes of those smells, as some stations have leaks due to poor maintenance or delaying treatment, so they accumulate for long periods, without maintenance, which increases the emissions of odors.

Comprehensive action plan

For its part, the Dubai Municipality confirmed that it has developed a comprehensive work plan to develop a Warsan sanitation station, in line with the urban renaissance and the accelerated population growth witnessed by the emirate, as part of its continuous efforts to develop the sewage system, and enhance the efficiency and flexibility of the infrastructure and its readiness for the requirements of the future.

She told «Emirates Today» that the development work includes a wide package of qualitative initiatives, most notably the introduction of sustainable and advanced wastewater treatment techniques, and the application of smart, fully automated systems to monitor and operate the station, and improve its operations, and said that “these steps will raise the efficiency of processing processes to advanced levels, and contribute effectively to reducing the phenomenon of spreading odors, and ensuring a safe health environment For society. ”

The municipality emphasized the work to increase the total capacity of the station at several stages, as the development processes contributed to increasing the daily energy of the station from 325 thousand cubic meters to 500 thousand cubic meters, with ambitious plans to reach 800 thousand cubic meters per day by 2030, which enhances Dubai’s ability to keep pace with its future needs of infrastructure services.
