A violent earthquake off the coast of the Philippines and tsunami warnings

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale struck in the sea off a southern Philippine province on Friday morning, and a dangerous tsunami was likely to occur in nearby areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it expects damage and aftershocks from the quake, which was centered in the sea about 62 kilometers southeast of Manai town in Davao Oriental province and was caused by movement in a fault at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said dangerous waves were likely to occur within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.
He added that waves up to 3 meters high above normal tide may be possible on some Philippine coasts near the epicenter of the earthquake. Smaller waves are likely in Indonesia and Palau.
The Philippines is still recovering from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred on September 30, which left at least 74 people dead and displaced thousands of people in the central province of Cebu, specifically the city of Bogo and outlying towns.
