List of federal agencies targeted by Trump for layoffs

US President Donald Trump and his administration prepared to lay off thousands of federal employees on Friday, using the government shutdown as an opportunity to target agencies that do not agree with the president’s views.

According to Axios, the mass layoffs could lead to a further reduction in the federal workforce, which has already declined by 200,000 employees since Trump took office, leading to the expulsion of thousands more of those responsible for shaping America’s health care, education, and environmental policies.

A spokesman for the largest federal employee union, the American Federation of Government Employees, told Axios that the Trump administration is “illegally” firing thousands of employees who provide “vital services” to communities across the country.

He added: “In the 93 years of the Federal Government Employees Union’s existence under several presidential administrations – including during Trump’s first term – no president has ever decided to fire thousands of workers who were furloughed during the government shutdown.”

The union is also suing the administration on behalf of more than 800,000 members.

The White House declined to comment on the layoffs, referring Axios to the Office of Management and Budget, which said the layoffs were ongoing and “significant.”
