Abu Dhabi, 15 October / WAM / The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed a loan agreement with the government of the Republic of Uganda worth 91.8 million dirhams (equivalent to 25 million US dollars), to finance a road development project linking four main districts, namely Kumi, Ngora, Sereri and Kagwara, in eastern Uganda.
The project is being implemented with joint funding from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Government of Uganda, and aims to improve the infrastructure of the transportation sector, thus contributing to enhancing economic activity and facilitating residents’ access to service and commercial areas.
The agreement was signed by His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and His Excellency Matia Kasaija, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the Republic of Uganda.
The project includes upgrading the road, which extends over a distance of 98.3 kilometers, and includes the implementation of civil works and the development of bridges and associated facilities. The road consists of a 7-meter-wide path, in addition to two-meter-wide side shoulders on each side.
The project contributes to enhancing economic and social development by supporting safe transportation and enhancing commercial activity in the Kaguara region, in addition to reducing the time and cost of travel, and raising the level of traffic safety along the road.
His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi said: Our strategic partnership with Uganda embodies our firm commitment to supporting comprehensive development efforts, in line with the strategy of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development aimed at developing the transportation sector as one of the basic pillars for achieving sustainable economic progress.
Al Suwaidi added: “Funding the road development project represents a pivotal step towards improving the quality of life of residents in eastern Uganda, as it contributes to enhancing connectivity to the national transportation network, which facilitates access to basic services. The project will contribute to creating a qualitative shift that supports stimulating economic activities and creating new job opportunities for individuals during the implementation and operation phases.”
For his part, His Excellency Matia Kasaija expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development for its continued support, noting that the project supports the development of infrastructure in eastern Uganda.
He stressed that this fruitful cooperation reflects the depth of the growing relations between the two sides, explaining that the project will contribute to facilitating transportation, enhancing regional trade, and developing the areas adjacent to Lake Kyoga, in addition to improving traffic safety levels, thus promoting a safer transportation environment for the beneficiary communities.
He expressed his aspiration to expand areas of cooperation with the Fund in the future, to include new economic and development sectors.
This project is an extension of the strategic cooperation between the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the Republic of Uganda, which began in 1977, and resulted in the financing of 3 development projects in vital sectors with a total value of about 79.3 million dirhams.
This cooperation reflects the Fund’s keenness to support the sustainable development process in partner countries and enhance its positive impact on the prosperity of societies.
