Salem Abdul Rahman defeats the world number one in chess

International master Salem Abdul Rahman, a player for the UAE national team and the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, achieved an unprecedented historical achievement by defeating Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, ranked first in the world, in the Titled Tuesday International Blitz Chess Championship, which was held “online” with the participation of 401 elite players from the game’s stars around the world.
Salem Abdul Rahman performed exceptionally during the tournament, achieving 6.5 points out of 8 rounds, confirming his high readiness and professionalism against the most prominent chess players on the world stage.
Abdullah Murad Al Mazmi, head of the technical staff at the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, confirmed that this historic victory reflects the great development achieved by Salem Abdul Rahman, pointing out that beating the world’s first ranked player represents a great technical and moral achievement and a strong motivation to continue his brilliance in the upcoming tournaments.
Al Mazmi added that the player continued a series of distinguished results during the recent period, the most notable of which was his crowning of the Chase.com Championship and a number of bright international participations that established his position among the world’s elite players, stressing that what he achieved represents an inspiration for the rising generations of chess players in the Emirates.
He also praised the great support provided by the club management, headed by Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, praising its keenness to provide the ideal environment for developing players and motivating them to achieve achievements and raise the UAE flag in various international forums.
