Austria is close to achieving 100% sufficiency in renewable electricity by 2030

Vienna, 16 October / WAM / Austria has recorded remarkable progress in the field of transition towards clean energy after the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources rose by the end of last year to 94% of the total energy consumption in the country, according to a report by the Energy Regulatory Authority.
The authority explained in its report that wind energy and photovoltaic energy witnessed significant growth that contributed to raising the total amount of green electricity to about 70,861 gigawatt-hours in 2024, and revealed an increase in the total production of renewable electricity by 12,241 gigawatt-hours.
Alfons Haber, a member of the Board of Directors of the Austrian Energy Regulatory Authority, pointed to the positive results resulting from increasing the share of renewable energy in Austria’s electricity and stressed that “the competitive situation in the electricity market has clearly improved,” and considered that Austria is moving steadily towards achieving its goal of providing electricity by 100% from renewable sources by 2030. The authority highlighted the strategy of the Renewable Energy Expansion Law, which aims to generate electricity by 100% from renewable sources by 2030, in addition to adding 27 terawatt-hours of renewable green energy production, in addition to 5 terawatt-hours of renewable gas.
Haber emphasized that “competition and security of supply remain critical elements in implementing the energy system transformation process.”
