Nobel Peace Prize winner supports Israel in phone call with Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Friday that Venezuelan opposition leader and recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado expressed her support for Israel during a phone call with Netanyahu. The office added in a statement that Machado “welcomed the return of the Israeli hostages, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, and expressed her appreciation for Israel’s efforts against Iran, which it described as a threat to both countries.”

Netanyahu congratulated Machado on winning the Nobel Prize, and praised her efforts to promote democracy and peace. Machado has previously pledged to move the Venezuelan embassy in Israel to Jerusalem if her movement comes to power, joining other Latin American leaders who have taken pro-Israel positions, including Argentine President Javier Meli and former Brazilian President Jair. Bolsonaro.

The embassies of most countries are located in Tel Aviv, and not in Jerusalem, which the Palestinians also demand as the capital of a future independent state.

Machado has long sought closer relations with Israel and Netanyahu, to position itself in contrast to the current Venezuelan government, which maintains relations with Iran and other opponents of Israel.
