Legalizing the driving of delivery bikes on fast lanes in the streets of Dubai

Dubai, 19 October / WAM / The Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Police General Headquarters announced the legalization of driving delivery bikes on the express lanes on the streets of Dubai, starting next November 1, so that delivery bike drivers are prohibited from driving in the two left-most express lanes on streets consisting of 5 or more lanes, and from riding in the left-most express lane on streets consisting of 3 or 4 lanes. On streets that consist of two or fewer lanes, there is nothing preventing delivery bike drivers from riding on them.

Hussein Al-Banna, Executive Director of the Traffic and Roads Agency, at the Roads and Transport Authority, said: “The decision comes in light of the significant growth witnessed by the delivery sector in recent years, and was based on specialized traffic studies, standards and technical evidence within the regulatory framework adopted by the Authority to govern this vital and important sector, to keep pace with international best practices and the approved road map that regulates all areas of security and safety in delivery operations, in a way that enhances Safety on the emirate’s roads.

He pointed out that the Authority will work with Dubai Police, the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai, and partners in the delivery sector to monitor and observe drivers’ commitment not to ride delivery bikes in the two fast lanes of streets that have more than 5 lanes, and not to drive in the fast lane of streets that consist of three or four lanes.

He said that the Authority will place signs indicating the prohibition of commercial bicycles on signboards in the streets of Dubai to indicate the lanes on which driving is prohibited, and the signs will be next to the signs of trucks and heavy vehicles whose movement was previously prohibited on the express lanes. The new procedures for banning the driving of delivery bikes on the express lanes will be introduced through an awareness-raising media campaign, in cooperation with the delivery sector companies in the emirate.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, said that the strategic partnership and distinguished relationship between Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority contributed to raising the level of coordination and joint work, and achieving the goals of the traffic safety strategy in reducing traffic accident deaths in Dubai.

He stressed that the decision to ban the riding of delivery bikes on fast lanes in the streets of Dubai comes within the framework of the ongoing efforts between Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority to implement the five-year executive plan for the traffic safety strategy, which includes four main axes: traffic control and control, road and vehicle engineering, traffic awareness, and systems and management. It will also contribute to the efforts aimed at reaching the highest levels of traffic safety and enhancing commitment. Traffic law, in addition to controlling and controlling its movement, and preventing accidents that may have serious consequences for road users.

He explained that violating drivers will be fined 500 dirhams for the first violation and 700 dirhams if the violation is repeated, and the permit will be suspended if the violation is repeated for the third time. Delivery bike drivers who drive at a speed of more than 100 km/hour on streets with a speed limit of 100 km or more will be fined with a fine of 200 dirhams for the first time, and 300 dirhams for the first time. The time The second time, and 400 dirhams the third time.

He stressed that traffic statistics showed an alarming increase in the number of motorcycle “delivery” accidents, as a result of some drivers not adhering to traffic laws, and some of them being reckless on highways, which poses a serious danger to their lives and the lives of other road users. He explained that statistical reports issued by Dubai Police revealed that 854 traffic accidents occurred last year and 962 traffic accidents during the year 2025, due to violations and violations by drivers of this category of vehicles.

He stated that Dubai Police issued 70,166 violations last year against “delivery” motorcycle drivers for not adhering to traffic laws, while the number rose to 78,386 violations during the past nine months of this year, which reflects the continuation of some wrong behavior.

Al Mazroui pointed out that motorcycles are one of the means of transportation most vulnerable to fatal accidents, due to the lack of a protective structure around the driver and the high possibility of losing control at high speeds, stressing that the decision comes within the framework of a proactive approach to protecting lives and enhancing road safety.

The Authority and the Dubai Police General Command confirmed that committed companies will be honored within the “Excellence in the Order Delivery Sector” award for companies.
