The first in 8 years.. The US Secretary of Defense visits the border between the two Koreas
Direction US Secretary of Defense Hegseth House to The inter-Korean border on Monday in the first visit of its kind by a US defense minister in eight years.
South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-bak accompanied his American counterpart to Panmunjom, the only place where soldiers from the two Koreas stand face to face, after they visited a hill known as the Ouellet observation point.
The two ministers stressed the strength of the joint defense position and the close cooperation between South Korea and the United States."Hegseth’s visit comes after US President Donald Trump’s repeated initiatives towards North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his Asian tour last week, which did not receive any response from Pyongyang. Trump last met Kim during his first presidential term, and visited Panmunjom in June 2019. North Korea when he briefly crossed the border, before returning with Kim for a bilateral meeting.
Before Trump’s visit, his Defense Secretary James Mattis visited the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas in October 2017.
