river "Hectoria" Antarctica’s glacier records the fastest retreat in modern history

Snow and ice at the Earth’s poles are important factors in regulating ClimateBy reflecting sunlight, and an essential part of the Earth’s glacial system that contains a huge reserve of fresh water, in the east of the AntarcticaLocated at the South Pole, researchers are constantly tracking the flow of a river "Hectoria" Glacier, as a recent scientific study showed that the river’s ice retreated at the fastest rate recorded in modern history during the year 2022.
A team of researchers found that about 50% of the glacier’s area disintegrated in just two months, after analyzing geophysical data and satellite images Artificialover a period of time.
The amount of retreat
The amount of retreat amounted to about (25) kilometers during the period between January 2022 and March 2023, including about 8 kilometers lost between November and December 2022 alone.
A team led by researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder explained that the flat rock layer on which the glacier rests made it float after its weight decreased significantly. Large and fast, which led to its rapid disintegration.
While lead researcher Naomi Oshawat stated that the team’s use of satellite data over different time periods was essential in monitoring the speed of decline.
