Zahran Mamdani wins New York mayor

Democratic candidate Zahran Mamdani, a fierce opponent of US President Donald Trump, was elected mayor of New York.

Mamdani became the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States on January 1.

With this victory, Mamdani writes his name in history as the first Muslim to assume the mayor of New York, the first person of South Asian descent, and the first African to hold this position.

He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1

President Trump threatened to cut off federal funding for New York City if Mamdani wins the mayor’s office in the municipal elections.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump described Mamdani as a “communist,” saying that he would leave the city with “zero chance of success or even survival.”

In Virginia, moderate Democrat Abigail Spanberger easily won the governor’s office.
