Mild tsunami waves reach northeastern Japan after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean triggered a mild tsunami in northeastern Japan, leading to the evacuation of some residents in coastal areas and a temporary partial suspension of Shinkansen bullet train services.
The Japan Meteorological Agency, which revised the earthquake’s magnitude from 6.7 as previously reported, issued a warning of tsunami waves up to one meter high for Iwate Prefecture after the earthquake occurred at 5:03 pm off the coast of Sanriku at a depth of about 16 kilometers.
The agency indicated that no injuries or material damage had been reported, and that residents of coastal areas in Iwate, including Ofunato, Rikuzentakata and Otsuchi, had received calls to evacuate.
Tsunami waves with a height of 20 centimeters were detected in the areas of Koji and Ofunato, while waves with a height of 10 centimeters reached Miyako and Kamaishi.
