المملكة: conference "Space Lead ’25’ explores the relationship between space and human health

Launched this morning at Al-Faisal University in Riyadh Conference activities "Space Lead ’25”, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chairman of the Board of Directors King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies.
The conference is considered the first of its kind in the Kingdom, which brings together an elite group of scientists, doctors, and researchers in the fields of health, space, and biomedical engineering, with the participation of local and international speakers, and the presence of His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Al Hayazea, President of Al Faisal University, and His Excellency Dr. Munir Al-Desouki, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. "CAXT”, and His Excellency Dr. Hala Al-Tuwaijri, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission and member of the University’s Board of Trustees.
Following the opening of the accompanying exhibition, the attendees toured among its many pavilions and viewed more than sixty research projects within the scientific hackathon accompanying the conference.
Conference Objectives
The conference aims to explore the relationship between space science and human health, and to shed light on scientific developments in Artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering and its role in supporting space medicine research and promoting the sustainability of health on Earth and in space environments.
The opening ceremony included a visual presentation entitled "Alfaisal University’s journey towards excellence and innovation.” Her Royal Highness Princess Dr. Maha bint Mishari bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Vice President of the University for External Relations and Development and Chair of the Conference’s Supreme Committee, also gave a speech in which she welcomed the guests, stressing that the conference represents "“A strategic step towards a future in which medical and engineering sciences converge to explore space and understand its impact on human health,” stressing the importance of scientific cooperation between universities and the research and industrial sectors.
Supporting scientific research
Dr. Khaled Al-Qattan, Chairman of the Scientific Committee, gave a presentation that addressed the conference themes related to the future of health and advanced engineering in space, stressing that the initiative comes as an extension of Alfaisal University’s vision of supporting applied scientific research that combines technology, medicine and space.
The conference witnessed a scientific speech by Professor Charles Elachi, former head of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and professor emeritus at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), entitled "Opportunities and developments in the field of Earth and space exploration.” During which he addressed the pivotal role of space research in developing treatments and understanding the physiology of the human body in low-gravity environments.
Scientific Skills
John Shannon, Vice President of Exploration, Space and Defense Systems at Boeing, also gave a speech entitled "“Building competencies for the space sector,” in which he stressed the importance of preparing a generation that possesses the scientific and engineering skills necessary to harness space technologies to serve human health and society.
During the morning period of the first day, two discussion panels were held about "The future of space in the Kingdom and Vision 2030,” and supporting investment in the space sector, with the participation of leaders from Communications, Space and Technology Authorityand NEOM Space Group, during which they discussed ways to enable biomedical research in the space environment and transform it into innovative opportunities that support the national knowledge economy.
The conference continues its scientific sessions today and tomorrow with the participation of researchers from King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Boeing, and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), to discuss topics including chronic diseases in the microgravity environment, and satellite-based health systems. Industrial, and the role of space science in understanding cellular aging.
