Abu Dhabi, 11 November / WAM / SnowMed International, the global body responsible for developing clinical standards, has approved Abu Dhabi Health Data Services Company, affiliated with the M42 Group, as a global reference site for standardizing clinical data and applying the SnowMed CT standard.
This accreditation comes as a culmination of the success of the “Malfi” platform, the first health information exchange network in the Middle East and North Africa region, and one of the strategic initiatives of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, in a comprehensive and wide-ranging application of the “SnowMed CT” standard for unifying clinical data, which makes the Abu Dhabi Health Data Services Company a role model for achieving coherence and integration in health care systems at the regional and global levels.
Abu Dhabi Health Data Services Company, as a global reference site, will work to share its distinguished methodology and governance frameworks with other health information systems in the UAE and the region, to support digital transformation efforts and apply unified standards. Its experience in multilateral collaboration, development of custom clinical reference sets, and quality assurance mechanisms represents a flexible and applicable model for healthcare systems wishing to achieve comprehensive standardization of clinical data.
The “Malfi” platform team had worked to implement the “Snomed CT” standard across the healthcare system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which connects more than 3,000 health facilities and allows more than 52,000 authorized users to access more than 3.5 billion medical records. The application included a wide range of clinical fields such as diagnoses, allergies, chronic diseases, family and social history, and diagnostic procedures and examinations, to ensure a unified and accurate representation of clinical data and concepts in various healthcare facilities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This application contributed to establishing an effective and sustainable model for data standardization in a way that reduces the need for terminology servers from third parties, while at the same time enhancing the quality of clinical data from its source in the electronic medical record systems of the entity that entered it.
Implementing the Snowmed CT standard provided a solid foundation for healthcare systems supported by artificial intelligence, allowing advanced analytics, predictive models, and clinical decision-making support at the emirate level.
A unified data infrastructure enables real-time monitoring of population health, creation of disease registries, and formulation of evidence-based health policies, as well as enhancing patient safety and improving care coordination at points of service delivery.
His Excellency Ibrahim Al Jallaf, Executive Director of the Digital Health Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, stressed that the success of the “Malafi” platform in implementing the “SnowMed CT” standard embodies the strength of the partnership between the public and private sectors in advancing the process of digital transformation in the health care sector in the emirate.
He said that this achievement reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision of building a smart health system that puts the patient at the center of attention and relies on the latest technologies to improve the quality of care and enhance health outcomes for society, adding that this step represents a qualitative addition to the emirate’s journey towards consolidating its position as a leading global destination in the field of health care.
For his part, Karim Shaheen, CEO of the digital health solutions platform at M42, explained that this global recognition confirms the possibility of achieving comprehensive standardization of clinical data on a large scale, when strong regulatory frameworks are integrated with specialized expertise and a culture of continuous development.
