Aramco: We invested $70 million in corrosion management technologies in 3 years

The Executive Vice President of Technical Services at Saudi Aramco, Wael Al-Jaafari, said that Aramco invested about $70 million in corrosion management technologies during the past three years alone.
This came during his speech at the activities of the nineteenth edition of the Middle East Metal Corrosion Conference and Exhibition, which was hosted by Dhahran.
Al-Jaafari added: Investing in corrosion management technologies contributed to avoiding costs and achieving savings amounting to about $770 million. Dollars.
He stated that corrosion is not only a technical challenge, but rather a strategic priority directly linked to business reliability and safety, and responsibility towards the environment.
Al-Jaafari said: "Today we use AI-powered solutions to predict corrosion before it happens, through a vast network of IIoT sensors distributed across our facilities and pipelines."
He added: "This sensor network provides us with more than 10 million readings annually to monitor corrosion at more than 40 of our facilities"
He continued: "Our ambitions are not limited to Saudi Aramco facilities only. We are working to integrate our deep experience in the field, our knowledge and our intellectual property with artificial intelligence technologies to develop advanced solutions to serve the energy and industrial sectors on the broadest scale."
3 trillion riyals corrosion costs
The Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation at Saudi Aramco, Ahmed Al-Khowaiter, said: At the global level, and in all sectors; The costs of corrosion are estimated at approximately $3 trillion annually, which is equivalent to about 3% of the global gross domestic product.
He added that studies indicate that approximately $1 trillion could be saved annually through the application of artificial intelligence and other technologies to combat corrosion.
He pointed out that with every dollar lost due to corrosion, there is an increase in risks to the safety of our colleagues, the safety of the environment, and to the continuity of energy supplies on which billions of people depend.
He continued: "AI gives us the ability to predict breakdowns before they occur, optimize maintenance schedules, and increase the lifespan of our critical assets"
He added: "We have firm belief that advanced technologies, skilled competencies, and fruitful partnerships will enable us to achieve the desired transformation in the energy sector, setting new global standards for the era of artificial intelligence."
The conference brings together a number of experts with the aim of discussing ways to prevent metal corrosion, whose annual global cost is estimated at approximately $3 trillion.
28 Memorandums of Understanding
The conference witnessed Saudi Aramco announcing 28 memorandums of understanding that may amount to more than $1 billion, including proposed cooperation in the areas of research and development of advanced materials and technologies, establishing facilities to localize manufacturing in the Kingdom, and cooperation in the field of training and development.
The conference represents The Middle East Metal Corrosion Exhibition is the oldest and most important regional event dedicated to the study of corrosion. This edition, hosted by the Kingdom for the first time, is considered the largest of its kind since the launch of the conference in 1979, where more than 5,200 people from 45 countries participated, more than 300 research papers were presented, and 25 workshops were organized, in addition to the participation of more than 1,500 students in the first special hackathon that focuses within the conference activities on innovation in the field of corrosion and science. Materials.
Senior executives at Saudi Aramco highlighted the transformational opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence, its role in overcoming chronic challenges related to metal corrosion, and the potential it provides for developing new and innovative materials on an industrial scale.
