Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death

A court in Bangladesh on Monday ruled that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted, be executed on charges of crimes against humanity.

Judge Ghulam Murtuza Mozumdir said while reading the ruling inside a crowded court in Dhaka that Hasina was “convicted of three charges,” including incitement, issuing orders to kill, and failing to take action to prevent atrocities.

He added, “We decided to impose one punishment on her, which is death.”

The court also issued a death sentence against former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman in the case, while a third accused – a former police chief – was sentenced to five years in prison after he turned a witness against Hasina and pleaded guilty.

The ruling was read today, from the court, on a live broadcast.

The interim government beefed up security ahead of the verdict, deploying soldiers, paramilitary border guards and police in the capital and many other parts of the country.
