The Arab League organizes the fifth regional conference of the Arab Forum for Women with Disabilities

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, Social Affairs Sector (Departments of Development, Social Policies and Women), in coordination with the Arab Organization for Persons with Disabilities, and in cooperation with partners, most notably the International Disability Alliance, the AGFUND programme, the United Nations Women, the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ), organized the fifth regional conference of the Arab Forum for Women with Disabilities, under the title: “The Second Arab Decade for Persons with Disabilities 2023–2032, and the Beijing Review +30: Political participation of women with disabilities and gender equality, during the period from 17 – 18 November in Cairo.

This comes within the framework of the efforts of the League of Arab States to promote the rights of people with disabilities, especially women with disabilities, and in implementation of the decisions of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs and its Executive Office, and in light of the directives of the Arab Women’s Committee.

 

The League of Arab States affirmed, in the speech, The editorial highlighted its interest in the issue of promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, at the highest levels of decision-making within the system, as this interest was crowned by the adoption by the Arab Summit in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2013 of the initiative of Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, where it adopted the Second Arab Decade for Persons with Disabilities 2023-2032, which included a number of important axes supporting the rights of women with disabilities, with an emphasis on giving priority to them in cases of epidemics and crises and within plans.

 

In the intervention of the General Secretariat, the content of the Second Arab Decade for Persons with Disabilities was reviewed, as well as the Arab Women’s Development Agenda 2023–2028, approved at the level of the Arab Summit in 2022, which was keen to integrate the perspective of disability into the various fields related to achieving gender equality, such as developing an official government database classified on the basis of disability.. The Women’s Development Agenda also calls for In the Arab region, there is a need to develop labor laws that guarantee the rights of women to work with equal pay with men, and to ensure the provision of a fair work environment that meets standards of safety and security, and is free of violence and discrimination based on disability.

 

It is expected that the recommendations that will be agreed upon will be submitted to the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs and the Arab Women’s Committee, in a way that enhances their implementation on the ground, in a way that reflects positively on the conditions of women with disabilities.
