Zamir on settler violence: Anarchists may set the region on fire in an instant

Israeli occupation army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir warned on Friday that failure to confront the rampant and uncontrolled violence by settlers in the West Bank could limit Israel’s ability to deal with security threats on other fronts, including Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.

Israeli media, including Channel 12, quoted Zamir as warning in internal deliberations, the details of which were not specified. He said: “If we do not stop the Jewish rioters, Israel’s ability to act may be more limited on the main fronts in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria.” Zamir pointed out the seriousness of the settlers’ actions, stressing that “these anarchists may set the region on fire in an instant, creating a situation in which all forces need to be transferred immediately from the Gaza and Lebanon borders to the areas of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), without there being a security interest for that at the present time.”

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli occupation army stressed that failure to address this crisis It may hinder all Israeli military plans, and he said: “We are in a critical period and the focus must be on Gaza and Lebanon.”

Zamir’s warning comes at a time when the West Bank is witnessing an escalation in violence and attacks by settlers against Palestinian citizens, amid repeated security warnings that these attacks affect the stability of the region and increase tension on the ground.
