Achraf Hakimi wins the 2025 African Player of the Year award

Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi was crowned the best player in Africa for the year 2025 during the annual ceremony organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). In the Moroccan capital, Rabat, becoming the first Moroccan player to win the award since Mustafa Hajji in 1998.

Hakimi entered the ceremony as a strong competitor alongside two previous winners of the award, namely the Egyptian international Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool player, and the Nigerian Victor Osimhen, the Turkish Galatasaray striker.

The award is the highest individual honor on the continent since its official launch by CAF in 1992, and Hakimi succeeded in receiving it. After he presented an exceptional season with Paris Saint-Germain, during which he led the team to achieve 6 full titles, most notably the Champions League title, the Moroccan international star, who played 88 international matches and scored 11 goals, also contributed 11 goals and 16 assists in 55 matches during the season.

Hakimi’s coronation comes at a time when he is recovering from a severe sprain in his left ankle, which he suffered after a violent intervention by Luis Diaz in Paris Saint-Germain’s match against Bayern. Munich (1-2) on November 4.

The player is expected to be absent from the field for a period ranging between 6 and 8 weeks, which puts him in a race against time to join the 2025 African Cup of Nations, scheduled between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026.
