Korea’s exports of dried seaweed exceed $1 billion

SEOUL, November 23 (WAM) – South Korea’s exports of dried seaweed reached an all-time high this year, exceeding US$1 billion for the first time, largely driven by its growing popularity in overseas markets, such as the United States, the South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on Sunday.

Total shipments of dried seaweed, known as “gim” in Korean, reached US$1.02 billion as of Thursday, an increase of 13.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Ministry attributed this increase to the improved competitiveness of “GIM” quality and the high demand in foreign markets, especially in North America and Europe, where consumption has risen sharply in recent years.

By country, the United States was the largest importer at $220 million, an increase of 15.3% from the previous year.

Japan came in second place with $210 million, an increase of 13.8%, while China ranked third with $100 million, a sharp increase of 36.6%.
