Fatal inaction.. The United Nations condemns the results of COP 30 in Brazil

In a speech during the United Nations Business and Human Rights Forum in Geneva, Türk warned that "Poor COP30 results in Belém show how corporate power imbalances are manifesting in the climate emergency"
He said: "The fossil fuel sector is making huge profits while destroying some of the world’s poorest communities and countries, and it is imperative that those responsible are held accountable for this injustice, and for all the other harms associated with climate change."
Turk highlighted a recent ruling issued by the International Court of Justice, which states: "Governments need to prevent serious damage to our climate, including by imposing regulations on companies"

He noted that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights had also recognized the right to a stable climate, and called on states to "Requiring companies to take preventive measures to avoid causing climate damage, and to provide compensation for any climate-related damages"

Not moving enough

Volker said: "I often wonder how future generations will judge the actions and deadly inaction of our leaders in the face of the climate crisis in 50 or 100 years."
He wondered whether future generations would consider inaction insufficient "Ecocide or even a crime against humanity".
