The UAE wins a category membership in the International Maritime Organization Council "for" For the fifth time in a row

London, 28 November / WAM / The UAE has won membership in the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Category B for the fifth time in a row, confirming its rightful place in the list of elected countries and its influential role in shaping the future of maritime transport regionally and globally.
This came during the International Maritime Organization’s meetings at its headquarters in the British capital, London, today.
The victory reflects the outcome of the intensive efforts made by the state over the past years to develop an integrated maritime sector, based on an advanced legislative structure, comprehensive digitization of services, enhancing ship safety, and supporting international trends to reduce emissions. This system contributed to consolidating the UAE’s position as a major player in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of global maritime transport chains.
The achievement highlights the growing international confidence in the UAE maritime system, which has established its presence through world-class maritime infrastructure, ports with leading operational capabilities, and advanced logistical services, in addition to a flexible regulatory environment that supports the growth of maritime trade and enhances its competitiveness and innovation.
On this occasion, His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, extended his warmest congratulations and blessings to the wise leadership, stressing that the sound vision of the leadership and its continuous support formed the basis for building an advanced maritime sector that has today become one of the vital pillars of the national economy and the international trade system.
His Excellency said that the UAE today leads the maritime sector regionally and globally, through an advanced legislative system and future policies that contribute to enhancing the security and sustainability of the seas, and raising the sector’s readiness for the challenges ahead. Thanks to the vision of the wise leadership, the country has established an advanced naval base that is considered a global model in legislative modernity, technical innovation, port management, and safety of navigation.
He added that the UAE’s victory in IMO Council Class B membership for the fifth time in a row represents a clear international appreciation for the pioneering role played by the country in shaping the future of global maritime transport, and reflects the international community’s confidence in the UAE’s ability to develop a legislative and regulatory system that supports a more efficient, flexible and sustainable maritime sector.
His Excellency explained that the UAE, since its accession to the International Maritime Organization in 1980, has established its active presence in developing international maritime legislation, and culminated its efforts in joining the organization’s Council in 2017 and has contributed over the past five sessions to advancing the international action agenda through constructive initiatives that supported enhancing maritime safety, reducing carbon emissions, protecting the marine environment, and developing navigation policies.
His Excellency stressed that renewing the UAE’s membership places a greater responsibility on it in the next stage, as it enables it to contribute effectively to formulating future policies for global maritime transport, promoting innovation and modern technologies, and supporting international efforts to achieve a safe, clean and flexible maritime transport system, capable of responding to climate challenges and supporting international supply chains.
His Excellency said that the UAE continues to work with its international partners and global maritime bodies to enhance the competitiveness of the global maritime sector and support transformation paths towards a more sustainable and innovative system.
