The United Nations holds its media symposium on peace in the Middle East: “Breaking Barriers”

What’s important?

The 2025 UN Media Symposium highlights the reality of reporting in one of the most dangerous and complex working environments in the world.

What issues will the symposium address?

The symposium, organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communication, addresses important issues including:

🔹The reality of journalistic work in Gaza today;

🔹Internal and external perspectives in newspaper reports;

🔹Maintaining journalistic integrity under pressure;

🔹Challenges of access to information;

🔹Combating media misinformation;

🔹Regional and international media responsibilities.

🔹The role of the international community in supporting the rights of journalists to work freely and safely.

Who are the participants?

🔹The Secretary-General of the United Nations will publish a message on the occasion of the symposium.

🔹The opening session will include speeches by Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming, Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, and Coly Seck, Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations and Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

🔹Participants in the symposium activities include Judy Ginsburg, CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Ibtisam Azem, chief correspondent for Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper at the United Nations in New York.

🔹During the events, video messages from Wael Al-Dahdouh, director of Al Jazeera’s bureau in Gaza, and Tanya Kramer, president of the Foreign Press Association, will be shown. Haggai Matar, executive director of +972 magazine; Nasser Abu Bakr, head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.
