The European Union imposes a fine on the platform "X" For social networking

Brussels, 5 December / WAM / The European Union imposed a fine of 120 million euros on the “X” social media platform, in accordance with the Digital Services Law “DSA”, which entered into force in 2023.

The European Commission’s decision came after it concluded that the “X” platform violated the rules of transparency by granting the blue authentication mark in a “deceptive” way that allowed any user to purchase it, thus losing the ability to distinguish between trusted accounts and others, in addition to not providing a public platform that reveals the identity of advertisers in order to facilitate the tracking of illegal ads, coordinated campaigns, and attempts to mislead during political processes and elections, in addition to its failure to make public data available to researchers as required by law.

The Commission explained that the fine was divided into 45 million euros for violating the authentication system, 35 million euros for violating advertising rules, and 40 million euros for non-compliance with data access requirements.

This ruling comes in the context of broader procedures opened by the Commission since December 2023 to verify the spread of illegal content on the platform and the effectiveness of its tools in combating the manipulation of information. In return, Brussels announced that it had obtained commitments from the TikTok platform to provide transparent advertising repositories that would allow researchers and civil society organizations to track ads and detect fraud or illegal materials, in a step that the Commission explained was a model of the required compliance.

The X platform has not made any comment yet, while the Commission confirmed that it had officially informed the company of its decision.
