Registration is open for the 2026 First Quarter Clean Energy Certificate Auction

Abu Dhabi, December 11, 2026 – Emirates Water and Electricity Company announced the opening of registration to participate in the first quarter auction of clean energy certificates in Abu Dhabi for the year 2026, which will continue until January 9, 2026.

The first auction of 2026 comes in conjunction with the growing desire to participate in the economic renaissance witnessed by Abu Dhabi, which reflects the clear interest of companies, institutions and individuals in using clean energy certificates issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy to document their consumption of electricity produced by renewable or clean energy sources.

As the only approved tool in the emirate that certifies that the electricity consumed is produced by renewable and clean energy sources, clean energy certificates allow entities to take concrete steps to reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, and highlight their leadership role in climate action in line with national goals.

The clean energy certificate auctions organized by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company during the year 2025 witnessed widespread interest from multiple major sectors, including healthcare, retail industry, real estate, events, and the commercial sector, where levels of demand were recorded that are among the highest since the launch of this scheme, reflecting the increasing demand for the consumption of widely adopted clean and renewable energy.

Engineer Mohammed Al Marzouqi, CEO of Asset Development and Management at Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said on this occasion that the increasing growth witnessed by the Clean Energy Certificates Scheme reflects a clear, fundamental shift in the way institutions from various sectors of Abu Dhabi deal with plans to reduce carbon emissions, and the transition from the level of ambition to practical implementation.

He added that clean energy certificates provide a transparent and internationally recognized path to adopting renewable and clean energy, to enable companies and institutions to track progress made in achieving sustainability goals, reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, and keeping pace with the country’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, calling on all parties, including individuals, to participate in the auction and contribute to promoting the common goals that have been achieved.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company is a major party in implementing the clean energy certificates scheme, by acting as the sole registrar and auction operator for these certificates issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, which is the only tool approved in Abu Dhabi to confirm the environmental and economic benefits that are achieved using clean energy. They are issued in units of 1 megawatt per hour, and are compatible with International Renewable Energy Certification (I-REC) standards.

Registration for the 2026 Clean Energy Certificates First Quarter Auction has opened and will continue until January 9, 2026.
