Manama, December 13 / WAM / The Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority discussed with the Ministry of Electricity in the Republic of Iraq the final preparations for the start of actual operation of the electrical interconnection project between the two sides, during a meeting held recently in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the mechanisms for starting the actual operation of the electrical interconnection project with the southern Iraq network, in addition to discussing ways to export electrical energy to the Republic of Iraq, within the framework of enhancing joint cooperation in the energy sector.

The meeting witnessed the presence of representatives from the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority and the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, where operational preparations were reviewed as the project’s actual operation phase approached, in addition to a review of the operating contracts to be signed before the official start of the expansion project. Visual presentations were also presented during the meeting that addressed the nature of the electrical networks in both parties, and the initial frameworks for energy purchase contracts were discussed.

The project aims to export electrical energy from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to Iraq through a project to link southern Iraq to the Gulf electrical connection, thus enhancing the stability of electrical networks in the region.

It is expected that the electrical interconnection project with the network of the Republic of Iraq will enter into operation during the first half of 2026.

Engineer Ahmed Al-Ibrahim, CEO of the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority, confirmed that the project to link the Gulf electricity market with the Republic of Iraq will open new horizons for Gulf electrical interconnection and cooperation in electrical energy trade. It will also greatly support the plans of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in the field of establishing a competitive electricity market.
