Details of the cemetery development project in Egypt

On Monday, Egyptian media revealed that the government is seeking to develop cemeteries, a step that is the first of its kind in years.

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Shorouk quoted the CEO of SOKNA, Ahmed Gaballah, as saying that the company is currently holding discussions with the government to launch a project to develop and rehabilitate cemeteries in cooperation with it during the year 2026.

He indicated during a press conference that the discussions include developing and building new cemeteries, rehabilitating existing cemeteries that are suitable, and transferring those that are not suitable to new ones.

Jaballah explained that work will also be done to develop the archaeological cemeteries without disturbing or demolishing them, and plots of land close to the targeted new residential areas are currently being studied and identified.

Through its ambitious development vision, “Egypt 2032,” Egypt seeks to reduce the areas of existing cemeteries within the urban space of Greater Cairo by about 1,058 acres.

It also aims to allocate about 10,000 acres to establish new cemeteries in the east and west of Greater Cairo, in addition to moving parts of existing cemeteries, especially some of which suffer from problems of high groundwater levels.
