Sharjah, December 23 / WAM / The General Secretariat of the Sharjah Award for Criticism of Arabic Poetry announced today the names of the winners of the fifth session, which came under the title “Cultural and Artistic Patterns in Contemporary Arabic Poetry,” and three Arab critics won.

The award is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs at the Department of Culture in Sharjah, to care for Arabic poetry and stimulate the energies of critics and those interested in studies directed towards the poetic experience in the service of the Arab creative arena.

Mahrez bin Mohsen Rashidi from Tunisia won first place for his research, “The Discursive System in Modern Arabic Poetry (Foundational Issues and Applied Practices),” and Al-Mahdi Al-Araj from Morocco came in second place for his research, “The System of Poetic Experience in the Contemporary Arabic Poem between the Argument of Renewal and the Dichotomy of the Model,” while Al-Hassan Muhammad Mahmoud won third place from Mauritania for his research, “Systemic Spaces in the Contemporary Arabic Poetry (A Systematic Study).”

Muhammad Ibrahim Al-Qaseer, Director of the Cultural Affairs Department at the Department of Culture and Secretary-General of the Award, said that the Sharjah Award for Criticism of Arabic Poetry has received, since its inception in 2020, the generous and continuous patronage of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, which had a great impact in establishing a comprehensive critical approach that contributed to re-reading Arabic poetry, and opened new horizons for Arab critics through the award’s topics that dealt with pivotal poetic issues.

He added that the current session presents three critical names to the Arab cultural scene, who worked very seriously on a critical topic that deals with “cultural and artistic patterns in contemporary Arabic poetry,” providing in-depth analytical insights while adhering to the scientific and methodological standards adopted by the award.

Al-Qasir pointed out that the award witnesses a remarkable growth in the volume of entries in each session, as it received in its current session more than 180 critical papers from several Arab countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Tunisia, Yemen, Sudan, Mauritania, and Libya, which reflects the expansion of its presence and consolidates its position on the Arab monetary arena.

He pointed out that the General Secretariat received research works from international countries participating for the first time in the award: Gambia, Mali, Guinea, India, and the United States, highlighting that these are contributions that confirm the importance of the award to critics from various countries of the world.

After ensuring that the research fulfills the conditions stipulated, the secretariat of the award entrusts a committee of specialists to conduct a preliminary screening of the research participating in the award to select research worthy of competition. After screening, the participating research is referred to five arbitrators, who must be critics and academics with recognized scientific competence, to select the research winning the first three places according to agreed upon critical criteria, provided that they submit an agreed-upon final report including justifications for the selection.
