Gold exceeds $4,500 per ounce

New York, December 24 / WAM / Gold exceeded the level of $4,500 per ounce today, Wednesday, for the first time ever, and silver and platinum also rose to record levels.
Gold rose in spot transactions by about 0.4% to 4,503.59 per ounce by 0000 GMT, after hitting a record high of $4,509.65 earlier.
US gold futures for February delivery rose 0.7% to a record level of $4,540.60 per ounce.
Silver in spot transactions increased 0.5% to $71.80 per ounce, and had previously recorded its highest level ever at $71.85.
The dollar fell to its lowest level in nearly three months, yesterday, Tuesday, against a basket of other major currencies, making gold denominated in the US currency more attractive to buyers abroad.
Platinum in spot transactions rose 2.9% to $2,342.25 per ounce after recording its highest level ever at $2,347.40, while palladium increased nearly 3% to $1,919.69 per ounce, its highest level in three years.
