Prisoners in Morocco celebrate the African Cup of Nations in their own way

The African Football Cup of Nations has ignited everyone’s enthusiasm, so much so that prison inmates in Morocco will participate in a mini-tournament that includes 150 inmates from 15 African nationalities, based on an initiative launched by the Public Service for Prison Administration and Reintegration in the country on the sidelines of the continental championship that Morocco is currently hosting.

The tournament will be held tomorrow, Thursday, in the local prison in Tamesna, near Rabat, in a festive atmosphere that reflects the values of sports and common African belonging.

The Moroccan News Agency quoted the Prison Service as saying that the initiative is not limited to matches, “as it includes presenting African Cup of Nations matches inside prison institutions, in addition to analytical and interactive workshops with former players and sports journalists, and cultural activities with the participation of relevant civil society associations.”

Prisons in Marrakesh, Tangier, Fez, Casablanca, and Agadir will also host matches in coordination with local clubs in “the framework of a vision aimed at strengthening the human and social dimension of prisons, and involving inmates in the national and continental dynamic.”

The Department confirmed that this initiative dedicates its “firm commitment to involving male and female inmates in prison institutions within the national and continental dynamic, and enabling them to participate positively in various national and continental demonstrations and stations in a way that serves the goals of rehabilitation and reintegration and in a way that establishes the openness of the prison institution to its external environment.”
