Rubio appears before Congress for the first time since the start of the Iran war

Today, Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to face a barrage of questions about the diplomatic efforts undertaken by the administration of President Donald Trump around the world, during two successive hearings before the House of Representatives and the Senate, for the first time since the start of the war against Iran.

The former Republican senator will appear before committees in the US House of Representatives and Senate to present the US State Department’s annual budget request, but the focus is likely to quickly shift to the already fragile ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran, which has recently been subjected to further tests as a result of the exchange of attacks between the two sides.

A number of members of the US administration, including Rubio, defended President Donald Trump’s decision to wage war, despite his previous pledges to avoid “endless wars” in the Middle East.

Changes in Trump’s goals for this war have made it more difficult to defend this decision.

Rubio will testify publicly before Congress for the first time since the start of the war with Iran on February 28, even though he participated in a secret briefing for representatives days after the first American and Israeli attacks against Iran.

During the briefing, Rubio faced sharp criticism from Democrats for not obtaining prior approval from Congress for military action, but he received strong support from most Republicans who support action against one of the United States’ oldest adversaries.
