Zelensky meets with Trump today to present the peace plan with its new provisions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United States yesterday, Saturday, where he is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump.
The bilateral talks are scheduled to begin today, Sunday afternoon, local time (8 p.m. Kiev time), at Trump’s private residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, according to the Ukrainian National News Agency (Ukrinform).
The Ukrainian delegation includes Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustam Omerov, Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Andrey Hnatov, Advisor to the Presidential Office Oleksandr Peeves, and First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kyslytsya.
On the American side, his special envoy Steve Witkoff, his senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and a number of other officials will participate in the talks, in addition to Trump.
The summit in Florida comes after the Ukrainian president presented a new version of the American plan to end the war, after it was amended following talks with Ukraine, which angered Moscow.
After an initial version that was more sensitive to Russian demands, the Kremlin believes that Kiev is trying through this latest version to “torture” the talks.
The 20-item document proposes freezing the battle lines on the front without addressing the Russian demand to withdraw Ukrainian forces from about 20% of the eastern Donetsk region that is still under its control.
The new text also no longer includes any legal obligation for Ukraine to refrain from joining NATO, which is another major demand of the Kremlin.
Along with the fate of Donbass, the region in eastern Ukraine claimed by Moscow, and the fate of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant occupied by Russian soldiers in the south, the two presidents are expected to discuss security guarantees that Western powers could offer as part of a potential peace deal. Volodymyr Zelensky stressed on Saturday that “these security guarantees must come in conjunction with the end of the war.”
The US President recently indicated that Ukraine, from his point of view, has every interest in freezing the front lines as quickly as possible in the face of any future Russian advance, which he considers inevitable.
