Al Qasimi Hospital performs the first catheterization procedure for a sixty-year-old patient using technology" Volt PFA "

Sharjah, December 30, 2017 – The Cardiac Electrophysiology Department at Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah, affiliated with the Emirates Health Services Foundation, has successfully performed the first treatment for heart rhythm disorders using the “Volt™ Pulsed-Field Ablation (PFA)” technology, which is one of the latest international technologies in treating atrial fibrillation, for a sixty-year-old Emirati patient.
The department received a patient suffering from recurrent attacks of atrial fibrillation, which were represented by rapid and irregular heart palpitations, sometimes accompanied by fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort. The frequency of these attacks had increased during the recent period, which had a negative impact on his daily activity and quality of life, despite his adherence to the prescribed drug treatment.
It became clear, after conducting the necessary clinical evaluations and cardiac examinations, that the condition required advanced therapeutic intervention to control the arrhythmia, so that the decision to intervene using the “Volt PFA” technique could be successfully taken.
Dr. Arif Al Nouryani, Director of Al Qassimi Hospital, said that this achievement embodies the commitment of the hospital and the Emirates Health Services Corporation to provide advanced health care based on adopting the latest global medical innovations, stressing that the introduction of the “Volt PFA” technology constitutes a qualitative shift in the treatment options for patients with heart rhythm disorders, and contributes directly to improving their quality of life and reducing complications associated with traditional treatments.
He pointed out that the implementation of this advanced procedure with the help of specialized medical personnel reflects their efficiency, readiness, and ability to deal with the latest medical technologies in accordance with the highest international standards, noting that these successive successes enhance patients’ confidence in national health services, and support the UAE’s position as a leading model in developing a health system based on results and positive impact.
For his part, Dr. Mohamed Magdy, Consultant and Head of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Department at Al Qasimi Hospital, explained that the Pulsed-Field Ablation (PFA) technique is considered an advanced non-thermal technique for treating heart rhythm disorders, most notably atrial fibrillation. It relies on sending high-energy electrical pulses that precisely target the tissues responsible for irregular electrical signals, while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding tissues.
He pointed out that the “Volt PFA” system is one of the latest “PFA” systems in the world, and is characterized by an innovative design in the form of a ball inside a basket that allows better contact with the target tissue, in addition to the possibility of performing electrical mapping and therapeutic ablation in one procedure using the same catheter. He pointed out that the system allows in some cases to perform the operation under light sedation instead of general anesthesia, which reduces potential risks and speeds up the recovery of patients, in addition to its integration with 3D cardiac mapping systems to increase the accuracy of determining the ablation areas.
This qualitative achievement comes in conjunction with the approval of the system by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which strengthens the position of the hospital and the UAE at the forefront of the leading health institutions regionally and internationally in the field of advanced health care.
