$16.75 billion in online shopping sales in Korea during November

SEOUL, 2nd January, 2017 (WAM) – Online shopping sales in the Republic of Korea jumped by 6.8% last November on an annual basis to set a record high, driven by strong demand for food-related services, according to data issued today, Friday, by the Korean Ministry of Data and Statistics.
The Korean Yonhap News Agency reported that the value of online shopping transactions reached 24.15 trillion won (16.75 billion US dollars) during November, an increase of 1.53 trillion won over the previous year, according to the ministry’s data, which indicated that this number is the highest since 2017, when it began collecting data.
Sales of food services, food and beverages rose by 13.7% year-on-year in November, and spending on travel and transportation services rose by 8.5% year-on-year, while online sales of household appliances and electronics decreased by 4.9%.
Purchases via smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices rose 7.9% year-on-year to 18.59 trillion won, also setting a new record.
