ABU DHABI, 2nd January, 2018 (WAM) – Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chief of the Presidential Office, the third session of the “Al Wathba Dates Festival” will be launched, organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, during the period from 9 to 18 January, as part of the activities of the Sheikh Zayed Festival in the Al Wathba area in Abu Dhabi.

The festival aims to support palm farmers, encourage local production of dates, and promote innovation in palm cultivation and related industries, in addition to preserving the UAE agricultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.

The Al Wathba Dates Festival includes 14 competitions for which 116 prizes have been allocated with a total value of more than two million dirhams, including seven date decoration competitions (Al Wathba Elite, Al Dabbas, Al Khalas, Al Fard, Al Shishi, Bu Maan, and Al Zamili), two date packaging competitions (without additives and with additives), three cooking competitions, and a photography competition in two themes (the Emirati heritage axis and the environment and sustainability axis), in addition to a drawing competition. The neighborhood.

The festival will also witness the organization of a “date auction”, which aims to highlight the quality of local date production, highlight the most distinctive types of dates in the UAE, and encourage farmers to ensure the sustainability of date production and development. Emirati dates are displayed to visitors and those interested, so that they have the opportunity to acquire luxury dates by bidding on display tables.

The festival also provides visitors with an integrated heritage experience through popular events and performances, in addition to providing date shops and a popular market that includes products that reflect the authentic Emirati identity.

Al Wathba Dates attracts those interested in and visitors to the Sheikh Zayed Festival in the Al Wathba area, as it is a specialized platform for marketing dates and their products, in addition to preserving the agricultural heritage in the country, and paving the way for the exchange of experiences between farmers from different countries of the world regarding modern agricultural methods, how to care for the palm tree, and introducing the authentic Emirati heritage.

The festival comes within the framework of the great interest that the UAE attaches to the palm tree and its products, as a symbol of goodness and generosity and an integral part of the national heritage and identity, in addition to its vital role in supporting the food security system and achieving sustainable agricultural development.
