Dubai Roads opens the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport

The Roads and Transport Authority, in partnership with the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects Corporation, opened the project to expand and develop the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport, by increasing the number of lanes from three to four lanes, increasing the capacity of the bridge from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, a growth rate of 33%, which contributed to enhancing the flow of traffic leading to the airport building, reducing travel time, and improving the customer experience.
The implementation of this bridge expansion project comes within the framework of the Roads and Transport Authority’s efforts to raise the efficiency of the road network and improve connectivity between the main axes and vital facilities, and as a result of direct coordination between it and the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects Corporation, as the entity responsible for planning and developing the infrastructure of Dubai airports, to ensure that traffic solutions are compatible with the current and future operating requirements of Dubai International Airport, which is considered the busiest airport in the world for international passengers, in a way that supports the sustainability of growth in the number of passengers and air traffic.
The expansion was implemented from three lanes to four lanes, by constructing a new bridge using an innovative system of iron box girders combined with a composite concrete slab. This engineering solution was implemented due to its high construction efficiency and the possibility of completing the bridge within a short period of time, without the need to implement traffic diversions on Airport Road, or install temporary supports under the bridge, to ensure that traffic is not affected, and that the highest safety standards are provided during the implementation of the project.
The project also included implementing road paving improvements, infrastructure services and landscaping works to achieve integration with the surrounding infrastructure, in addition to providing street lighting to enhance safety and visibility.
The Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects Corporation affirmed their joint commitment to continuing to develop the infrastructure supporting the aviation sector in Dubai, and raising the efficiency of traffic connectivity with the emirate’s airports, which contributes to enhancing the quality of life and supporting Dubai’s global competitiveness as a leading center for air transport and international travel. The Authority is keen to develop the infrastructure of the road network and transportation system in the Emirate of Dubai, and raise the efficiency of the main road axes, in addition to providing sustainable and flexible mass transportation options that contribute to facilitating the movement of residents and visitors, and improving the quality of transportation. Life, and enhancing the competitiveness of Dubai World as an attractive center for international events and events.
