Beyond hot flashes…a forgotten symptom facing women over the age of forty

Menopause symptoms go beyond hot flashes and typical mood swings; A study by the Newson Health Foundation (2024) revealed that women reported **98 different symptoms**, including an “unusual” and annoying symptom, which is “chronic itching inside the ears.”

Why does itching occur?

Dr. Catherine Smith, a specialist in women’s health, confirms that this complaint is real and not exaggerated, and is due to the following two reasons:

1. Hormonal fluctuations: A decrease in estrogen leads to a decrease in the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which are the elements responsible for moisturizing the skin.
2. Dryness of the ear canal: The skin lining the ear becomes thinner, drier and more sensitive, and loses its natural protective oils, causing a feeling of deep itching that is difficult to reach.

Home solutions to relieve discomfort:

If it is confirmed that the itching is related to hormones and not an infection, experts advise the following:

Topical moisturizing: Apply drops of olive or coconut oil (fragrance-free) to moisturize the ear canal.
-Avoid cotton swabs: they increase dryness and may injure delicate tissues. It is enough to clean the ear from the outside with a wet cloth.
-Indoor and air humidification: Drink sufficient amounts of water, and use air humidifiers in closed rooms.
-Preventing chemicals: Make sure that shampoo or “harsh” hair products do not leak into the ear while showering.
-Supportive food: Focus on Omega-3 and zinc to support skin elasticity and repair its natural barriers.

When should you consult a doctor?
Dermatologist Stephanie Taylor stressed the need for a medical examination if the itching is accompanied by pain, secretions, or a change in the level of hearing, to rule out the presence of fungi or eczema that requires specialized treatment.
